Newswise — Janis L. McDonald, Bond, Schoeneck & King Distinguished Professor at Syracuse University College of Law, is available to comment on the passing of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

"The swift passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act by this session of Congress is a strong indication that in this new era perhaps the uneven access to power between the employer and employee may become more balanced," says McDonald. "Employees have never had access to the illegal motivations of employers who violate Title VII or other antidiscrimination laws; the new law will work to protect employee claims so that they are not outdated before the employee learns of the discrimination."

McDonald is editor and co-author of "Employment Discrimination: Problems, Cases and Critical Perspectives," published by Pearson/Prentice Hall in 2006. Her current book, "Love Is Not Colorblind: Raising a Black Child in a Not So Polite White World," will be published in 2009.
