Newswise — The American Dental Association (ADA) and the National Association of Dental Plans (NADP) have agreed that NADP will administer licensing of the ADA's Code on Dental Procedures and Nomenclature (CDT) to NADP members under a licensing and marketing agreement entered into between the ADA and NADP.

Dental insurance companies use the CDT in the administration of their dental benefits plans.

The ADA holds the copyright for the CDT and any use or reprinting of the CDT in any product or publication requires a license. The ADA recently updated its process for licensing the CDT for use by software vendors, dental benefit companies, and others.

"This program significantly streamlines the administrative process for the ADA in licensing the dental benefits sector to use the CDT," said Dr. James Bramson, ADA executive director. "We can provide NADP members with preferred pricing, a standard licensing agreement and a process to obtain clarifications and advice regarding the agreement in return for NADP's coordination of the licensing process with its members. It benefits us both."

Dr. Bramson added, "We appreciate the willingness of NADP's leadership to engage in the detailed discussions necessary to develop this agreement. NADP's Foundation Chairman, Dr. Roger Adams, Board Chairman Jon Seltenheim and Executive Director Evelyn Ireland helped us understand better the operational issues that plans have in licensing the CDT."

Evelyn F. Ireland, NADP executive director noted, "Since NADP members use the CDT in their business operations to describe benefits, contract with dental providers, and process claims among other functions, an umbrella licensing program is an important member service. The ADA staff has been very responsive in developing the details of the agreement and in providing clarifications on a continuing basis."

Under the "Association Licensing Program" NADP gathers signed agreements from members, bills and collects licensing fees and distributes the CDT to its members on an annual basis.

NADP is the largest national trade association of dental benefit organizations in the United States with members that provide dental benefits to about 95 million Americans or 60% of the dental benefits market. NADP headquarters are in Dallas, Texas at 8111 LBJ Freeway, Ste. 935. For more information visit NADP on the web at http://www.nadp.org.

The Chicago-based ADA is the largest and oldest national dental association in the world. The ADA supports advocacy, research, and professional development for more than 149,000 members or approximately 72% of dentists in the US.
