Security, water issues and economic integration are among the border-related themes to be discussed by a group of renowned scholars from the United States and Mexico during the Lineae Terrarum: International Borders Conference March 27-30.

The four-day conference is a collaborative effort by the University of Texas at El Paso, the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez, El Colegio de la Frontera Norte and New Mexico State University. Conference organizers said the goal of the event is to bridge the gap between scholars and border policy makers.

"This is the largest conference of its kind on border issues. There will be about 350 presenters from borders all over the world," said UTEP political science professor Dr. Tony Payan, an event coordinator.

The conference's opening session will be at 8:30 a.m. Monday, March 27 at the Union East, Third Floor. Monday and Thursday's conference sessions will be at UTEP. Tuesday's presentation will be at UACJ in Ciudad Juárez and Wednesday's will be at NMSU in Las Cruces.

National and international researchers, professors and experts will present close to 80 panel discussions during the conference. The sessions will cover topics such as free trade, immigration, public health, technology, religion and education along the border. There will also be workshops on grant writing, community planning and more.

"This conference is for academics and researchers of all disciplines to open a constructive dialogue with our policy makers. We have huge goals for this conference and our border's future," Payan said.

Those interested in registering for the conference need to do so by Wednesday, March 1. For more information call 915/747-7985 or visit http://research.utep.edu/lineaeterrarum.
