BACKGROUND:

The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy at Shenandoah University have partnered with Loudoun County Public Schools, for the second year, to provide a unique opportunity for young women interested in gaining hands-on experience in molecular biology and genomics. This program is supported in part by a generous grant from Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to Loudoun County Public Schools.

The GO GIRL program is designed to provide opportunities for young women to increase their understanding of the field of molecular biology, participate in experiments, and encourage their academic interest in science. The program runs June 21-25, 2010 from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm at the GW Virginia Science and Technology Campus and is open to rising 10th, 11th or 12th grade young women from Loudoun County Public Schools.

Students will conduct laboratory experiments while gaining valuable exposure to current state-of-the-art research techniques, including genotyping and DNA probing and sequencing. They will also have the opportunity to experiment with florescent proteins while exploring gene expression and genetic modification of organisms.
