Newswise — Just before the band plays the collection of service songs, more than 200 men and women will receive their long-deserved medical, graduate nursing, and biomedical sciences degrees.

And shortly after that, 156 new doctors will take their Hippocratic Oath and Oath of Office, making the transition from medical students to uniformed physicians.

Air Force Lieutenant General James G. Roudebush, Medical Corps, the U.S. Air Force Surgeon General, will address the graduates of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, or USU, at the university's 30th Commencement Exercise, Saturday, May 16.

As the Air Force's top medical leader, General Roudebush advises the Secretary of the Air Force and the Air Force Chief of Staff, as well as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs on matters pertaining to the medical aspects of the air expeditionary force and the health of the Air Force population.

The USU's Commencement Exercise will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall, Washington, D.C. The F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine will award 156 Doctor of Medicine and 55 Biomedical Sciences Graduate degrees.

Additionally, the university will award its first degree in its new Physician Scientist program. The Graduate School of Nursing will award 54 Master of Science degrees in the Family Nurse Practitioner, Perioperative Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Nurse Anesthesia disciplines, along with three Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Nursing Science.

Many USU faculty members are experts in the fields of post traumatic stress disorder, deployment psychology and traumatic brain injury.

The Uniformed Services University is located on the grounds of Bethesda's National Naval Medical Center and across from the National Institutes of Health. It is the nation's federal school of medicine and graduate school of nursing. The university educates health care professionals dedicated to career service in the Department of Defense and the U.S. Public Health Service. Students are active-duty uniformed officers in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Public Health Service who are being educated to deal with wartime casualties, national disasters, emerging infectious diseases and other public health emergencies. Of the university's more than 4,200 physician alumni, the vast majority serve on active-duty and are supporting operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, offering their leadership and expertise.
