FIRST JOINT PROGRAM ANNOUNCED BY MSU AND DETROIT COLLEGE OF LAW

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The first formal joint academic program of Michigan State University and the Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University--one that enables students to earn both a law degree and a master of business administration degree in four years of full-time study--is now accepting students for fall semester 1997.

The university and the law school, which began a unique affiliation in 1995, announced the new program at a press conference today.

"We're delighted to be the university's partner in this endeavor," DCL/MSU dean Jeremy T. Harrison said. "Graduates who have this particular combination of degrees are in high demand in many different fields."

Founded in 1891, DCL/MSU is the nation's oldest independent, continuously operating school of law. Under the terms of its affiliation with the university, the school retains its independent status; no state monies are used to support its activities. It is the only private law school affiliated with a public university in the country.

"This program is a win-win proposition for both the law school and the business school," said James B. Henry, dean of The Eli Broad Graduate School of Management. "The combined knowledge of the legal environment and of business management is a strong foundation for business success."

Law classes will be held in a new $28 million building, a state-of-the-art facility that features advanced learning technologies, including computer-based instruction, and a comprehensive law library. The building, which opens in August, will also house an expanded Business Library.

Business classes will be held in Eppley Center and the new North Business Complex, which are adjacent to the law building.

"This program reflects our determination to provide an outstanding program of academic depth and rigor that will prepare our students for positions of leadership in business and in the legal profession," said MSU President Peter McPherson. "It is the first of many formal programs that the university intends to establish with the law school."

The new JD/MBA program complements DCL/MSU's full- and part-time JD programs and Broad's full- and part-time MBA programs. For more information, call the DCL/MSU Office of Admissions at (517) 432-0222 or The Eli Broad Graduate School of Management at (517) 355-7604.
