RE: NATIONAL POVERTY CONFERENCE
The Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is hosting a national conference May 22-24 to explore future trends in poverty issues.
"Understanding Poverty in America: Progress and Problems," is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; the Annie E. Casey Foundation; the Ford Foundation; the Russell Sage Foundation; and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.
The following is a selected list of conference sessions you may want to cover. All events will be held at the Pyle Center, 702 Langdon St.
-- "The Level, Trend, and Composition of Poverty," Monday, May 22, 1:15-2:30. Gary Burtless of the Brookings Institution and Timothy Smeeding of Syracuse University.
-- Poverty policy roundtable discussion, Monday, May 22, 7:30-9 p.m. Panelists: Ron Haskins, staff director of the Subcommittee on Human Resources, U.S. House of Representatives' Ways and Means Committee; Wendell Primus, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities; and Gordon Berlin, Manpower Demonstration Research Corporation.
-- "The Effects of Welfare Reform," Tuesday, May 23, 1:15-2:30 p.m. Ladonna Pavetti of Mathematica Policy Research.
-- Robert Lampman Memorial Lecture: "Poverty, Inequality, and Mortality," by Angus Deaton, Princeton University, Tuesday, May 23, 5:30-7 p.m. The lecture and the reception afterward are open to the public.
