CREIGHTON OFFERS NATION'S FIRST E-COMMERCE/LAW PROGRAM

For Immediate Release: March 29, 2000

OMAHA, Neb. -- With electronic commerce revolutionizing the way the world conducts business, the demand for legal expertise in e-commerce is expanding at the same rate.

Creighton University's College of Business Administration and the School of Law are responding to that demand by creating the nation's first Juris Doctor-Master of Science in Electronic Commerce dual-degree program.

The program allows students to earn separate Juris Doctor (J.D.) and Master of Science in Electronic Commerce (M.S.) degrees in less time than required to complete each degree separately and for less tuition.

"This combined degree program is the first of its kind in the United States. For students interested in the legal, business and technical aspects of e-commerce, this is the cutting-edge program," said Patrick Borchers, dean of the School of Law at Creighton University.

Each candidate for the coordinated program must make separate application to and be accepted by the School of Law and the College of Business Administration. Up to six hours of law school course work may be counted into the master's program, while up to 12 hours of graduate courses may apply to satisfy the J.D. elective requirements.

"This program is an excellent opportunity for students to maximize and concentrate their education in the exciting arena of e-commerce and law. The potential of e-commerce is unlimited and as this form of business continues to expand, the legal system must keep pace," said Ravi Nath, Ph.D., director of the Joe Ricketts Center in Electronic Commerce and Database Marketing and chair of the Department of Information Systems and Technology at Creighton University.

The coordinated program is available immediately to students who are enrolled in both the School of Law and the College of Business Administration and its Master of Science in Electronic Commerce program.

Creighton is an independent Catholic university operated by the Jesuits. It has been ranked No. 1 for the past four years among Midwestern universities in the U.S. News & World Report magazine's "America's Best Colleges" edition.

Creighton enrolls approximately 6,300 students in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, the Graduate School, University College, and the schools of Nursing, Medicine, Law, Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, and Summer Sessions.
