The Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, the nation's first new independent engineering college in nearly a half century, will dedicate its Needham, Mass., campus and inaugurate its founding president in dual ceremonies Saturday, May 3. The day will be full of academic pomp and circumstance, including a student-produced ceremony featuring the college's new mascot, the phoenix

The event will also honor the generosity of the F.W. Olin Foundation, which has committed approximately $400 million to build and operate the college, as well as provide full-tuition scholarships for all students. The Foundation, long a leader in higher education giving, made the commitment to boost the nation's technological leadership.

The college hopes to provide a new model for engineering education that incorporates entrepreneurial thinking and the arts to produce "Renaissance engineers." The initial class of 75 freshmen, who began their studies last August, consists of top engineering students from around the country. Many of them gave up slots at the nation's leading institutions for the chance to be pioneers and partners in the creation of a new college.
