ST. JOHN'S PROFESSOR SCRIBES ANTHOLOGY OF PHYSICIAN/POETS

Jamaica, N.Y. (December 10, 1998)--Dr. Angela Belli, Professor of English, St. John's University, has edited an anthology of poetry by physicians entitled Blood and Bone: Poems by Physicians, newly released by the University of Iowa Press.

With co-editor Jack Coulehan, Dr. Belli has compiled a collection of contemporary poetry by various physicians in a myriad of specialties, including: Robert Coles, Professor of Psychiatry and Medical Humanities at Harvard Medical School and winner of a Pulitzer Prize for the "Children of Crisis" series; Rafael Campo, Professor of Internal Medicine at Harvard Medical School and winner of the 1993 Poetry Series Award; and Dannie Abse, a practicing physician and one of Great Britain's foremost poets. According to the University of Iowa Press, the 100 poems "record instances of pain and recovery, joy and grief, humor and irony within the restricted society of caregivers and their patients."

The book testifies to the strong bond between doctor and patient and the meaning they find in suffering and illness. The poems also bring humor and compassion into the world of medicine, providing new insights into the deepest thoughts of doctors, many of whom make life and death decisions everyday.

Angela Belli is professor of English at St. John's University. She has written many articles and speaks widely on issues related to the medical humanities. Jack Coulehan is director of the Institute for Medicine in Contemporary Society and is professor of medicine and preventive medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The book is available directly from the University of Iowa by calling 773/568-1550.
