Newswise — Now Physician Assistants around the country and around the globe can obtain an advanced degree and further their careers with a new distance learning option at Stony Brook University.
The new distance learning option is offered through the Post-Professional Masters Program for Physician Assistants (PPMP), which has been in existence at Stony Brook since 2006.
Designed especially for working professionals, this highly affordable 30-credit program provides a unique focus on administration, management, teaching and research skills. The program helps prepare graduates for career advancement opportunities in all areas of healthcare reform.
Core curriculum courses include: Ethics and Healthcare, Contemporary Issues in Healthcare Delivery, Clinical Prevention and Population Health, Evidence-Based Medicine: Evaluating and Applying Clinical Research, and Research Writing.
The program also provides personalized elective coursework in areas such as Healthcare Finance, Health Law, Health Policy, Principles of Managed Care, Group Practice Management, and Leadership in Healthcare.
The new distance learning program option is partially funded through a two-year grant from the NY State Department of Health. Courses will continue to be offered both online and on site at the Stony Brook campus on Long Island and in Manhattan, NY.
This program is offered in the Department of Physician Assistant Education in the School of Health Technology Management. Applications for the spring semester of 2011 are being accepted until Dec. 1. Following this date, application deadlines are April 1 for the summer session and July 1 for the fall session. Additionally, many unions reimburse for advanced degree education.
