Newswise — Jonathan Alter, a senior editor and columnist at Newsweek magazine, will be the featured speaker at a special program at Southern Connecticut State University to mark the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The forum, to begin at noon Sept. 11 in the Grand Ballroom of the Michael J. Adanti Student Center, is entitled, "9/11 + Five Years: What in the World Are We (And Should We Be) Doing?" Alter will deliver a status report of his observations as to what has happened domestically and internationally since 9/11. His speech will be followed by a panel discussion that includes Alter, several SCSU faculty members and a former media relations chief for the U.S. Army. They will respond to Alter's assertions and outline their own thoughts and ideas. The panel discussion will include questions from the audience.

The event is free and open to the public.

Alter, who has written extensively about the aftermath of 9/11, will also be available for book signing opportunities at the conclusion of the program. He is the author of, "The Defining Moment: FDR's Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope," which was published earlier this year by Simon and Schuster.

He is a contributing correspondent for NBC News, as well as MSNBC and CNBC, and is a frequent guest on various talk shows. He has earned many awards for his column, including a prize from the National Headliner Awards for Special Column on One Subject for a series of columns on life after 9/11.

Alter joined Newsweek as an associate editor in Nation section in 1983. He was named a senior writer in February 1987 and a senior editor in September 1991. He has been a freelance writer for publications that include The New Republic, Esquire and The New York Times.

The panel is expected to include: Patricia Olney, SCSU associate professor of political science; Kevin Buterbaugh, SCSU associate professor of political science; Stephen Judd, chairman of the SCSU History Department, and Rick Scavetta, former chief of media relations for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan. Art Paulson, an SCSU professor of political science who is frequently tapped for commentary in the media, will serve as moderator.

Olney is an expert on terrorism, particularly in South and Central America. She visited the Middle East last year and attended a program on counterterrorism in Israel. Buterbaugh specializes in international relations and is teaching a course this semester called, "America as Empire." Judd is an expert on Islam and the Middle East and recently returned from a trip to Syria. Scavetta is a former reporter for Stars and Stripes magazine and previously worked as a reporter for the New Haven Register.
