Newswise — In the throws of the crisis in Asia, Northeastern University has announced it will match the amount of funds raised on campus up to $25,000. NU students, staff and faculty are banding together in a University-wide effort to provide relief for the tsunami victims and their families. The campus efforts have been mobilized by Scott Quint, director of the International Student and Scholar Institute, and Shelli Jankowski-Smith, director of Spiritual Life, the relief effort will provide information for the University community as well as opportunities to help out in different ways.

The kick-off to the University-wide tsunami relief effort was on January 10th when $1000 in donations was raised at a previously scheduled event with the Boston Red Sox and Center for the Study of Sport in Society. For more opportunities to donate there are several drop-box locations on campus. Also, on Friday, Jan. 14 at 3p.m. there will be an Interfaith Prayer Service, which will be open to all.

Donations from the University-wide effort will be divided amongst four charities, Unicef, American Red Cross, National Coordinating Agency for Natural Disaster and Refugee Relief (Bakornas PBP)/Indonesia and Royal Thai Embassy's Relief Fund.

The university has recognized the need for support and counseling after a tragedy such as this, and will publicize the availability of counseling and support through campus resources, as part of their tsunami relief effort. There will also be information on volunteer opportunities through the Center for Community Service as well as the University's Volunteer Fair on January 19. There are also plans to educate on the science of the tsunami through a forum or information session with an expert

Some student groups have taken their own initiative in fundraising as well. The Islamic Society of Northeastern University will hold a fund raising event on January 30 from 4p.m. " 9p.m. Islamic Relief and the Islamic Council of New England will cosponsor this event. The event will include a dinner, a presentation by Islamic Relief as well as speeches by the Indonesian community just arriving from there. Proceeds will go to tsunami victims in Indonesia. In addition, the Indonesian Student Union held a prayer meeting on Saturday, Jan 8. and collected donations for a local man.
