EVANSTON, Ill. – When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its 2016 Oscar nominations this morning, diversity was almost completely missing. The overwhelming response was quickly reflected in the trending hashtag, #OscarsSoWhite.

Harvey Young is a professor of radio, television and film, theatre, performance studies and African-American studies in the School of Communication at Northwestern. Miriam Petty is an assistant professor of radio, television and film in the School of Communication at Northwestern. She has taught and lectured widely on film, African- American literature and Black popular culture. Her book, “Stealing the Show: African American Performers and Audiences in 1930s Hollywood,” explores the complex relationships between black audiences and black performers in the classical Hollywood era.
