Newswise — The National University of Singapore (NUS) has been placed 25th in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2014-2015, moving up one place from 26th last year. This is also the university’s best performance since the rankings were introduced in 2010.

THE World University Rankings employs 13 separate performance indicators to reflect a university’s strengths in five areas - Teaching, Research, Citation, Industry Income and International Outlook. This year, NUS has improved its performance in Teaching, while maintaining a strong performance in International Outlook and Research.

In addition, NUS has been placed among the global top 50 in all the six subjects measured. Its subject areas were placed as follows: Engineering & Technology (13th), Social Sciences (29th), Life Sciences (34th), Physical Sciences (41th), Arts & Humanities (42th) and Clinical, Pre-clinical & Health (44th). The university’s performance for Arts & Humanities has received a better ranking this year, while it has maintained its position for Engineering & Technology, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences.

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said, “We are delighted that NUS has continued to advance steadily in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, rising to 25th in the world this year and is one of only two Asian universities to be amongst the world’s top 25. We take pride in achieving our best performance in the rankings since it was introduced in 2010. Our consistently strong performance in international rankings is an affirmation of NUS’ top quality education and research, as well as wider impact of our work. This is also the result of the strong commitment to excellence by our faculty, staff and students.”

“We will continue to innovate and further differentiate ourselves by pioneering fresh approaches in education, strengthening strategic partnerships with the world’s best institutions, and establishing thought-leadership through high-impact research,” Prof Tan added.

Mr Phil Baty, Editor, Times Higher Education Rankings, said, “In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings supplement, published on 2 October, Simon Marginson, professor of international education at the UK’s Institute of Education, says that NUS has ‘arguably the most successful global strategy of any university in the world’. I would agree. The THE rankings have charted NUS’ outstanding progress from 40th place in 2011-12 to reach the world top 25 for the first time ever this year. The university clearly benefits from a highly potent mix of strong government financial backing, powerful global strategic alliances, a truly international outlook and a dynamic leadership. It is truly a university that stands out as a leading example to others.”

“The THE World University Rankings are based on 13 separate performance indicators which cover the full range of a global university’s core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook – so NUS’ achievements are benchmarked against the world’s most trusted university performance system,” Mr Baty added.
