The Ib's Online and in-Person Resources Help Educators Reach Their Full Potential.

Newswise — Bethesda, MD—The International Baccalaureate (IB) has released its 2012-13 catalogue of professional development opportunities for IB educators, and in some cases, also for educators who work outside the IB teaching and learning environment. At the hub of the IB World Schools community, the IB Organization has a team of professionals who continually respond to the changing demands of providing high quality international education by producing workshops, seminars, publications, and other resources to support educators at every experience level. The new catalogue describes dozens of workshops across a broad swath of subject areas and learning activities for educators responsible for pupils and students 3-19 years of age. Professional development opportunities include online and in-person activities. The catalogue appears online in English, Spanish, and French at http://www.ibo.org/events/documents/IB_workshopcatalog .

“The IB has a three-tiered professional development architecture,” explains IB Director Anthony Tait, Global Professional Development. “It ensures that educators at every experience level have access to professional development opportunities. IB educators are committed to professional development,” he adds, “as a means of sustaining high-quality teaching practice through critical thinking and reflection.”

Each workshop included in the IB catalogue describes its recommended audience: workshops are targeted for administrators, teachers, librarians, heads of school, counselors, career guidance officers, and specialist teachers; others are introductory for teachers from non-IB schools. Among the offerings:• A workshop on the IB’s signature class for Diploma Programme (DP) students, Theory of Knowledge, recommended for teachers new to the DP and those from interested or candidate schools. • A workshop in interdisciplinary teaching and learning held at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, designed to demonstrate use of the museum environment as a teaching resource.• A workshop to explore international education that goes beyond food, flags, films, and festivals, that emphasizes intercultural awareness, the importance of multilingualism and global engagement.• Professional development tours to Germany and the Czech Republic, and to Peru, that blend online coursework, onsite exploration to encourage international mindedness through inquiry, and a visit to an IB World School in the region.• Introduction of the IB philosophy for school owners and members of governing boards.

IB workshops are led by IB-trained educators, members of the IB Educators Network, who have three or more years of experience teaching at an IB World School, have a solid history of IB professional development under their belt, and who are trained by the IB Academy, intensive training events held several times a year to prepare IB educators to successfully lead IB workshops.

Registration for IB workshops occurs online on a continuous basis throughout the year.
