New Dean a renowned expert in software systems engineering

Newswise — Singapore, 28 June 2013 - The National University of Singapore (NUS) announced today that it will be appointing Professor David S. Rosenblum as the new Dean of its School of Computing. Prof Rosenblum, currently a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the School of Computing and Director of the School’s Felicitous Computing Institute, will take over from Professor Ooi Beng Chin as the School’s sixth Dean with effect from 1 July 2013.

Prof Ooi, who is also the Director of the Interactive Digital Media Institute at NUS, has served as Dean of NUS School of Computing since August 2007. During his tenure, the School progressed to 8th place in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2013 for “Computer Science & Information Systems”. In addition, two companies incubated at the School were acquired by McAfee and NTUC Link during his term.

Prof Ooi will remain in the NUS School of Computing, where he will continue to contribute as a professor in the Department of Computer Science and in the areas of research and innovation.

Said Professor Tan Eng Chye, Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost of NUS, "On behalf of the University, I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Professor Ooi Beng Chin who has served with dedication and distinction as Dean of the School of Computing. Beng Chin has put the School on a very strong trajectory of excellence, particularly in the areas of education, research and entrepreneurship. NUS Computing today is highly ranked and greatly respected in Singapore and internationally.

The new Dean of Computing, Professor David Rosenblum, brings with him a wealth of industry experience, connections and deep research strengths. I am confident that David will bring NUS Computing to even greater heights.”

A highly regarded expert in software systems engineering, Prof Rosenblum first joined NUS as a professor in Computer Science in 2011, bringing with him a broad range of academic and industry experience. Prior to joining NUS, he was Associate Professor at the University of California, Irvine from 1998 to 2002 and Professor of Software Systems at University College London from 2004 to 2011. He also spent a substantial period of his career in the industry as a Research Member of the Technical Staff and Principal Investigator at the AT&T Bell Laboratories (now AT&T Labs Research) in New Jersey and as a Principal Architect and Chief Technology Officer at PreCache Inc. in California.

Prof Rosenblum said, "I am delighted to have been selected as the new Dean of the NUS School of Computing. The School is in a very strong position, thanks to the outstanding leadership of my predecessor, Professor Ooi Beng Chin, who has brought us to the Top 10 in many international rankings. These rankings reflect the truly exceptional, world-class quality of our faculty, students, research and educational programmes.

In the coming years, I will work to strengthen our collaborations with the local industry, to grow our initiatives in entrepreneurship, to innovate in technology-enhanced learning, and to further consolidate our position of local, regional and international academic leadership in computing. The field of computing is evolving more rapidly than ever and remains vitally important for industry and society. There will be many opportunities and challenges in the coming years, and I look forward to leading the School through this next phase of our growth."

Prof Rosenblum’s research covers a wide range of software problems, including his interest in software engineering, internet scale software technologies, and ubiquitous computing. He has published extensively with 50 journal papers and 79 conference and workshop papers to his credit. He also holds 11 patents for software engineering methods and systems. Prof Rosenblum was conferred as Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2006. In 2010, for his contributions to software testing and distributed systems and for service to the software engineering community, Prof Rosenblum was conferred as Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

Having previously served as the Associate Editor of prestigious software engineering journal IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, he is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology. He also served as the Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on Software Engineering Executive Committee from 2009 to 2012.
