Newswise — Ball State University's Center for Media Design and Movielink, the broadband video on demand (VOD) service, have formed a research and development relationship focused on studying college students' views on video downloading of feature films and their attitudes toward piracy.

The research will also examine college students' unique requirements for legitimate online video services. This information may provide ideas for the design and implementation of services which provide a compelling alternative to piracy.

"Through this research, we hope to find out what elements and features are most important to students so legitimate services, like Movielink, can offer a substantially better alternative to piracy," stated Andrea Devenow, Movielink's director of business development. "We have chosen to enter into a relationship with Ball State and the Center for Media Design because of their impressive ability to bring together the expertise from faculty and staff in various areas of the university's IT and research groups to this exciting project."

"We think we're perfectly positioned, to explore a range of issues from needs and wishes of student Internet video users to their attitudes toward piracy and legitimate services. The answers we find could have a real impact on the evolution of legal alternatives to piracy," said Rodger Smith, associate director of the Center for Media Design. "It is our hope that the research will help provide a clearer picture of how students view Internet piracy versus legitimate services, and how the university could educate its students about these issues."
