STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY TO CONFER 6,402 DEGREES AT LONG ISLAND’S LARGEST COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

Four Honorary degrees will be awarded:- Dr. Henry Laufer, Doctor of Science- Dr. Marsha Laufer, Doctor of Humane Letters- Hyun Soon Lee, Executive Vice Chair of Hyundai-Kia Motors – Doctor of Science, - Dr. Jane Lubchenco, Wayne and Gladys Valley Professor of Marine Biology and Distinguished Professor of Zoology at Oregon State University Doctor of Science (conferred at the Doctoral Graduation and Hooding ceremony on Tuesday, May 24)

WHAT On Wednesday, May 25, 2011, Stony Brook will celebrate the 51st Commencement Ceremony.

The main ceremony begins at 11:00 am in the Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

6,402 degrees -- the largest commencement ceremony on Long Island -- will be awarded to the class of 2011:

*The Student Speaker is Michelle Mbekeani, a German Language and Literature and Political Science double major with a minor in Middle Eastern Studies who is headed to the University of Chicago Law School after graduation. Michelle is Miss Black New York USA 2011 and will compete for the Miss Black USA title this summer. She is the three-time first place winner of Stony Brook University Black History Month Essay/Speech Contest; she is the 2010 Stony Brook University Ralph Watkins Scholarship Recipient which is awarded to one student that exemplifies outstanding academics and community service; she won the 2009 National Miss Black and Gold title, a Scholarship Pageant sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., after winning at local, state, and regional levels; she is the 2007 NAACP National ACTSO Gold Medalist for which she advanced from local competitions to first place on the national level in the category of Oratory for an original oration on the achievement gap in the black community and for four years she has achieved membership in the National Honors Society for Collegiate Scholars/ Golden Key Honors Society/ Dean’s List.
