Newswise — Scott C. Brown, Ph.D. will join Colgate University as associate vice president and dean of students starting January 14, 2008.

Brown is a visionary student affairs leader with more than 15 years of experience in higher education.

He most recently served as director of the Daniel L. Jones Career Development Center at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, M.A. During his eight year tenure at Mount Holyoke, Brown was instrumental in supervising all aspects of the career development center including: recruitment, graduate school advising, budget management, and the development of programs to maximize alumnae-student interactions.

"Scott is a very exciting hire," said Charlotte Johnson, vice president and dean of the college. Johnson was part of the national search committee that recommended Brown. "His professional background and his strong sense of community make him a great match for Colgate. I look forward to working with Scott as we forge new pathways in student affairs."

Brown is eager to join the Colgate community. "What makes Colgate special is how explicitly you are connecting the liberal arts with the most practical and pressing needs of today, namely ethical leadership and responsible citizenship," said Brown.

He has a keen interest in creating powerful learning environments, most notably with his research into learning on college campuses. Brown penned Learning Across the Campus: How College Facilitates the Development of Wisdom, a theory detailing the process of how students integrate what they learn in and out of class as well as on and off campus, and how they apply what they learn to their lives.

Brown calls his new role "one of the most exciting positions on campus" because he will be "hard-wired into all aspects of undergraduate life from matriculation to graduation, helping students translate and deepen hallmarks of their rigorous liberal arts education into skills necessary to lead in a complex world."

Before joining Mount Holyoke, Brown worked at the University of Maryland, Dartmouth College, and the American Association for Higher Education. Originally from Los Angeles, C.A., Brown earned a B.A. in English from the University of Irvine and an M.S. in college student personnel administration/counseling and counselor education from Indiana University. He also holds a doctorate degree in college student personnel administration from the University of Maryland.

Scott and his wife Anne-Marie have three children.

Founded in 1819, Colgate University is a highly selective, residential, liberal arts college serving nearly 2,750 undergraduates with diverse backgrounds, interests, and talents. Colgate is situated on a rolling 515-acre campus in central New York State.
