Michael Owens, a native of Queens and a doctoral student in the Political Science Department at the University at Albany, has won a Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship Program for Minorities. He received this prestigious award, which is administered by the National Research Council in Washington D.C., in recognition for his work on urban issues. Only 29 such fellowships were awarded across all doctoral disciplines this year.

Owens is writing his dissertation on "The Politics of Black-Church Based Community Development." This fall, he will be a visiting assistant professor at Emory University in Atlanta. He plans to be a college professor when he has completed his educational studies.

After receiving his undergraduate degree in political science from Syracuse University, Owens went on to complete his master's degree in legislative affairs at George Washington University. He came to UAlbany in order to work at The Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government. Founded in conjunction with the University's Nelson A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, the Rockefeller Institute is the natural research arm of Albany's nationally-ranked, federally-funded programs in public administration and policy, criminal justice, and social welfare.
