Students worried about surviving their first year of college can gain helpful advice from a free guide.

The University of Virginia's Northern Virginia Center and HRD Press have collaborated on a unique public service effort to help teens survive and thrive during their first year in college. Steve Gladis, center director, has written a "Surviving the First Year of College: Myth vs. Reality" guide that HRD Press has made available free of charge to individuals at its web site, http://www.hrdpress.com.

The guide offers students advice on how to approach that often difficult first year away from home in a new educational setting. It emphasizes the importance of developing strong study skills, attending class, knowing when to ask for help, listening to your instincts and developing a positive attitude.

The idea for the guide grew out of a request from a friend for some advice that her son could use upon entering college. Gladis wrote a letter to the student that outlined 10 secrets to a successful first year.

Gladis will donate any proceeds from the book, which is also available in print, to education-related charities.
