Newswise — Recognized as the leading event in the U.S. in the field of emerging markets, the fifth annual conference, "The Financing of Corporations in Emerging Countries," hosted by the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business and the World Bank, will be held on March 28-29 at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, DC.

Highlighting issues and practices surrounding the financing of corporations in emerging countries, the conference participants will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing corporations to access capital on domestic and international markets. A special feature of the conference will be Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz delivering the keynote address at lunch on March 29.

Robert F. Bruner, Dean of the Darden School and a conference organizer, will open the conference on March 28. Bruner has participated in this conference from the beginning and is committed to its goals. "Investing in emerging markets is a powerful instrument for social change," says Bruner. "By funding and disseminating the best practices in business, we stand to improve the efficiency of investing in emerging markets. As efficiency rises, the well-being of millions trapped in poverty is bound to rise, too."

The goals of the conference are to bring together practitioners and scholars for an exchange of ideas, to generate top-quality, managerially relevant research on investing in emerging markets, and to generate materials that will help define best practices. Conference speakers will address some of the following issues: (1) institutions and governance; (2) political economy and internationalization; (3) cross-listing; (4) capital structure; and (5) institutional environment.

Each year, the conference generates cases and teaching notes on best practices; video interviews with experts; slides and papers from practitioner and scholar presentations; practitioner briefings to be published by CFA Institute's research foundation or by Darden's Batten Institute; and publication of research papers in scholarly journals as appropriate.
