HARTFORD, Conn., Oct. 1 -- A distinguished group of individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the arts and demonstrated courage -- by pushing the limits of aesthetic conventions, or overcoming resistance or personal hardship, or giving shape to ideas contrary to the social and political mainstream -- will be celebrated and presented with honorary doctorate degrees at Trinity College's fall convocation.

The convocation, "The Art of Courage," will be held on Friday, Nov. 12, 1999. The day will begin with a public panel discussion at 2:30 p.m. in the College's Vernon Social Center and will conclude with the honorary degree ceremony at 5:30 p.m. in the Trinity Chapel.

The panel will feature the honorands, who will discuss their lives and work. Those to be honored include: Willie Colon, an 11-time Grammy nominee, prolific salsa recording artist, and advocate/pioneer for Latin music; Leon Golub, a widely exhibited artist who addresses issues of violence and misuse of power in contemporary society in his large-scale paintings; Dollie McLean, a Hartford community leader and co-founder of the Artists' Collective, a center for youth, teaching, and culture; and Jackie McLean, a world-renowned, Hartford jazz musician, teacher, and co-founder of the Artists' Collective.

Also to be honored and to participate in the panel discussion are: Susan Meiselas, an award-winning photojournalist whose work documents the lives of the politically and socially dispossessed; Patrick J. O'Connell, an arts activist and administrator, founding director of Visual AIDS, and Trinity alumnus; Tina Packer, founder, president, and artistic director of Massachusetts' Shakespeare & Company; and Peter Schumann, creator of Vermont's internationally known Bread & Puppet Theater.
