Newswise — CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia — The University of Virginia Darden School of Business today announced that Professor Paul Simko is this year's Darden recipient of the 2013 Mead Endowment.

An endowment named for Darden Professor John Colley sponsors a Darden faculty member to participate in the Mead Endowment Program. The program encourages faculty members to pursue “Dream Ideas” that engage students.

In December, Simko will teach the core accounting class for Darden’s Global MBA for Executives program, which will be taught in Brazil. The location gave him an idea — a Dream Idea — to hold several experiential learning activities related to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games to be held in Rio. He plans to coordinate visits to the various sites where Olympic events will take place to allow students to see the planning process for the games and learn about their societal and economic impacts on the city.

The visits will be designed to help students understand factors such as the dislocation of favelas, the name for substandard settlements that house the economically disadvantaged, and the future use of Olympic venues once the games are over.

This isn’t the first time that Simko has been praised for his innovative teaching. He received the inaugural Transformational Faculty Award from Darden’s MBA for Executives EMBA Class of 2013. For five years, he served as associate dean for the program and led the design and implementation of curricular advances that resulted in top national rankings.

Simko teaches courses in both accounting and financial statement analysis. His research investigates how alternative accounting treatments affect the decisions of investors and financial analysts and how investors assess firms’ earnings quality.
