"If the natural sciences can be successfully united with the social sciences and the humanities, the liberal arts in higher education will be revitalized "¦" " E.O. Wilson, Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge

Newswise — The University of the Arts (UArts) and University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) recently signed an exchange agreement opening the door for students to take for-credit classes at each others' campuses starting this upcoming spring semester.

"USP is very enthusiastic about this agreement," Dr. Philip P. Gerbino, President for the University City-based USP said. "It creates opportunities for students with different discipline interests and different methods of solving problems to share ideas, be creative, explore new horizons, and broaden the higher education experience. This is an approach to what we hope will be a growing relationship. One that will provide each of our respective institutions and their students experience in taking courses in new environments." Under the terms of the exchange agreement, USP students can explore their creative side with classes in the UArts College of Media & Communication (CMAC) or in private instrument instruction at the College of Performing Arts (CPA), while UArts students can broaden their knowledge base with science and business classes at USP.

"This marriage of arts and sciences is a natural," said Miguel Angel Corzo, President of The University of the Arts, which is located on the Avenue of the Arts on South Broad St. "In this age of eroding traditional geographic and cultural boundaries, we have a responsibility to offer our students the most well rounded education available so they can compete in the global economy. This partnership is a direct line toward achieving that mandate."

Intended to enrich the curricula of both institutions by exposing students to coursework not included at their home school and promote collaboration among students and faculty, up to 10 students from each school are eligible each semester. Paying tuition to their home institution, students may take up to 18 credits of course work at the away campus over six semesters.

The University of the Arts is the nation's first and only university dedicated to the visual, performing and communication arts. Its 2,300 students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs on its campus in the heart of Philadelphia's Avenue of the Arts. Its history as a leader in educating creative individuals spans more than 130 years.

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia is a private, coeducational institution founded in 1821 as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, the first college of pharmacy in North America. Comprising four colleges across a broad range of majors, USP specializes in educating its 2,500 students for rewarding careers through its undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs in the health and related sciences.
