UIC Commencement 2002

WHO/WHAT: More than 5,000 students receiving undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees will participate in the pageantry ofUIC commencement.

WHEN: Sunday, May 5 10 a.m.

WHERE: UIC Pavilion 525 S. Racine Ave. (at Harrison Street)

DETAILS: University of Illinois President James Stukel and UIC Chancellor Sylvia Manning will host a reception for graduates and their guests under a tent in Lot 11, on Harrison Street east of the UIC Pavilion, starting at 8:15 a.m. The procession begins at 10 a.m.

This year's commencement speaker is Connie Payton, widow of former Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton. Mrs. Payton has given many years of public service on behalf of children who are wards of the state and vigorously promoted family issues and family awareness.

After the death of her husband, she established the Walter Payton Cancer Fund, which seeks to aid in finding an ultimate cure for cancer. She continues her efforts to bring public awareness to family issues and cancer research by generously giving her time and support to these causes.

This year's student speaker is Julie Sadhu, a mathematics major from Frankfort, Ill. Other speakers include Stukel, Manning and University Trustee Susan Gravenhorst.

UIC will present two honorary degrees.The recipients and their degrees are:

Thomas Seger Wikman, founder of Music of the Baroque, conductor, voice teacher, pianist and organist, who has spent more than 30 years helping to shape the musical landscape of Chicago; Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts.

Henry Louis Gates Jr., the W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University, prolific author and editor,who has gained critical acclaim for his work, which helped to establish African-American studies as a field of inquiry and commentary; Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

University of Illinois Alumni Achievement Awards will be presented to award-winning innovator in medical illustration and visualization Jane Hurd, (B.S. 1968) and laser surgery pioneer Rocco Lobraico Jr., (M.D. 1941).

The University of Illinois Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award will be presented to retired business adviser David Weinberg.

The University of Illinois Alumni Association Humanitarian Award will be presented to Vickii Coffey, (B.A. 1981) former executive director, Chicago Abused Women Coalition.
