Newswise — Barry R. Chiswick, distinguished professor and head of economics at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will testify before the full SenateJudiciary Committee April 25.

Chiswick, who has an international reputation for his research in labor economics, human resources, the economics of immigration, minorities, religion and income distribution, will talk about the economic consequences of immigration.

Chiswick's research focuses on immigrants' adjustment in the United States and their impact on the U.S. economy.

A former senior staff economist for the President's Council of Economic Advisers under presidents Nixon and Ford, Chiswick has frequently testified before Congress on pending legislation. He has been at UIC since 1978.

The hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee is called "Immigration"and will be chaired by Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.). The hearing begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, Room 226, in Washington.

Chiswick's most recent book is "The Economics of Immigration" (2005),which explores why immigrants move, their labor market adjustments in the destination country, the economic impact they have on their destination, and immigration policy.
