Misericordia University SLP Professor Publishes Second Book on Cluttering

Newswise — Kathleen Scaler Scott, Ph.D., C.C.C.-S.L.P., assistant professor of speech-language pathology at Misericordia University, recently had her second book published on the communication disorder known as cluttering. “Managing Cluttering: A Comprehensive Guidebook of Activities’’ with David Ward, Ph.D., of the University of Reading, England, is an interactive therapy manual/CD-ROM combination that was published by Pro-Ed, Inc., of Austin, Texas, in January.
Cluttering is a communication disorder that affects a person’s ability to speak in a clear, concise and fluent manner. Cluttered speech typically sounds overly rapid, or contains rapid bursts, together with poorly articulated or jerky speech. Dr. Scaler Scott’s latest book is designed to help speech-language pathologists address the needs of their clients with cluttering. The book provides evidence-based rationale for activities; step-by-step instructions for treatment methods; reproducible letters for parents; home activities for clients; and chapters on cluttering and stuttering, and cluttering combined with other diagnoses such as autism.
The text is a useful resource for speech-language pathologists working in any setting and with clients of any age. Dr. Scaler Scott is a resident of Flemington, N.J. She specializes in child language disorders, literacy, autism spectrum disorders and fluency disorders. A practicing clinician since 1993, she has extensive professional experience in hospital, school and private practice settings, including the Misericordia University Speech-Language and Hearing Center in John J. Passan Hall on the lower campus. Her current research includes examination of the linguistic, phonological and fluency patterns in children on the autism spectrum, characteristics of cluttering, and clinician-researcher partnerships.
Dr. Scaler Scott holds a bachelor’s degree from Douglass College/Rutgers University, a master’s degree from Emerson College, and a doctoral degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Dr. Scaler Scott and Dr. Ward also co-edited the book, “Cluttering: A Handbook of Research, Intervention and Education,’’ which was published by Psychology Press in 2011. It was developed to release the latest theories and research on cluttering. The book is intended for SLP clinicians, faculty members, researchers and students in the field of speech pathology, as well as for people who clutter or their family members.
