Newswise — Diversification, motivation, mentoring ... These are just a few of the goals of the Space Telescope Science Institute's (STScI) "Youth for Astronomy & Engineering" Program (YAE). On Friday, Nov. 17 from 6-9 pm, STScI will host a "Parent and Daughter Evening Under the Stars." STScI is located at 3700 San Martin Drive, Baltimore, Md. 21218.

Middle- and high school-aged girls and their parents are invited to join us for a reception, lectures, and an opportunity to ask questions and interact with astronomical professionals. The featured speaker is Dr. Margaret Turnbull (Carnegie Institution of Washington). The girls will also have a chance to observe the stars and planets through the Morris W. Offit Telescope at the Maryland Space Grant Observatory.

The YAE is a program at STScI for youth interested in astronomy and engineering as a career. The YAE provides opportunities for its participants to be exposed to activities and experiencs that are representative of the work done by individuals in the astronomical and engineering fields. The YAE program provides a supportive environment that encourages diversity in the astronomical and engineering community by increasing awareness to young women, minorities, and those witih special needs.
