More than 2,000 geneticists will present their latest research results at the 47th Annual Meeting of The American Society of Human Genetics. The meeting is expected to draw at least 5,000 scientists who will compare notes on a spectrum of topics, from determining the genetic predisposition to certain cancers, to revealing the genetics of HIV and obesity.

The Science Writers' Workshop entitled "GENETIC TESTING AND THE MARKETPLACE" is scheduled for Wednesday, October 29, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. It will include discussions from geneticists representing the academic professional laboratory, the government, and private industry. Panelists are: Arthur Beaudet, MD, Baylor College of Medicine; Karen Rothenberg, JD,MPA, University of Maryland School of Law; Neil Holtzman, MD, MPH, Johns Hopkins University; Michael Hayden, MD, PhD, University of British Columbia; Elliott Hillback, Genzyme Corporation; Leon Rosenberg, MD, Bristol-Myers Squibb; Franciss Collins, MD, PhD, National Human Genome Research Institute, NIH; and Jessica Davis, MD, The New York Hospital.

As part of an educational effort to inform the lay community, a public symposium will be held on Thursday, October 30th from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. This year's event will be a performance of "The Cutting Edge," a drama by Jason Kravits, about the issues and ethics of biotechnology. It is produced by the Bethesda Academy of the Performing Arts Imagination Stage and sponsored by The American Society of human Genetics and an educational grant from Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. The press is cordially invited to attend this event. There will be a panel discussion following the performance.
