A Look At Schools That Bounce Back

Teachers and administrators from six poor but academically successful urban schools share their secrets for creating resilient schools in a new book, "Bouncing Back," written by three UAB professors of education. "Resilient schools face ongoing, tough, complex situations, and yet, are still successful," says one of the book's authors, Janice Patterson, Ph.D. Patterson says resilient school leaders create a culture of high expectations, communicating the message that all students can learn. The book identifies other strengths of resilient schools: a supportive environment; principals that shield teachers from duties that take away from teaching; and a willingness to improvise new approaches to improve achievement. "But to create a resilient school, your key people must agree to buy into the idea of resilience."
