Newswise — PARK RIDGE, ILLINOIS – In recognition and support of the nation’s nearly 6,000 student registered nurse anesthetists, Medtronic (formerly Covidien) is donating two enhanced direct laryngoscopes to each of the 115 accredited nurse anesthesia educational programs across the United States at an estimated market value exceeding $600,000.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and student registered nurse anesthetists use laryngoscopes in their work, education, and training to facilitate intubation of a patient for general anesthesia and to establish an airway. Medtronic’s donation comes as a direct result of its corporate partnership with the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), established in 2015.

“We are grateful for Medtronic’s generosity,” says Wanda Wilson, PhD, MSN, CRNA, executive director and CEO of the AANA and a former nurse anesthesia educational program administrator. “This donation enhances the quality education student registered nurse anesthetists are already receiving by guaranteeing that they will be able to use the latest and greatest laryngoscope technology. The result will be better-prepared anesthesia professionals entering the workforce to care for our surgical, obstetrical, and trauma patients.”

An enhanced direct laryngoscope (EDL) merges Macintosh direct and video laryngoscopy into one handheld device. The McGRATH® MAC EDL handheld device helps clinicians be prepared to respond to unanticipated difficult airways faster. The laryngoscope offers improved access to the patient’s airway. The device, drop tested to two meters, can endure rough handling in a fast-paced medical environment.

About the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Founded in 1931 and located in Park Ridge, Ill., the AANA is the professional organization for more than 49,000 nurse anesthetists across the United States. As anesthesia specialists, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) safely provide approximately 40 million anesthetics to patients each year for surgical, obstetrical, pain management, and trauma stabilization services. CRNAs deliver essential healthcare in thousands of communities and are able to prevent gaps in access to anesthesia services, especially in rural, inner-city, and other medically underserved areas of the country. They are highly valued in today’s healthcare environment because they deliver the same safe, high-quality anesthesia care as other anesthesia professionals but at a lower cost, helping to control rising healthcare costs.
