Newswise — The American Association of Neuromuscular & and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) released a new evidence-based guideline on Neuromuscular Ultrasound for the Diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Michael S. Cartwright, MD, AANEM member and guideline author, said, “The generation of evidence-based guidelines helps advance all aspects of medicine, including diagnosis. This particular guideline shows that neuromuscular ultrasound is accurate for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and that ultrasound adds value to electrodiagnostic studies during the evaluation of CTS.”
The guideline was designed to address two questions: (1) What is the accuracy of median nerve cross-sectional area enlargement asmeasured with ultrasound for the diagnosis of CTS? (2) What added value, if any, does neuromuscular ultrasound provide over electrodiagnostic studies alone for the diagnosis of CTS?
“As the field of neuromuscular ultrasound continues to grow rapidly, guidelines such as this provide value to AANEM members because they evaluate and summarize all available literature, help guide practice patterns and improve diagnostic capabilities, and provide evidence that is sometimes requested by payers,” Cartwright noted.
