The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Allstate Insurance Company will make this brochure available during Buckle Up America! Week, May 19-26, 1997. The AAP and Allstate would like to remind parents to follow child passenger safety recommendations. That includes buckling up everyone properly every time they use a motor vehicle and having children under the age of 12 ride in the back seat. The 1997 Family Shopping Guide to Car Seats will help families make decisions about how to properly buckle up their children on every ride. The brochure also contains a $5-off coupon for the purchase of any child safety seat sold at Toys R Us?including infant, convertible, and booster seats.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, child safety seats have saved 2,934 lives since 1982. Despite these impressive figures, many parents install child safety seats incorrectly which can result in injury or death in the event of a crash. It has been estimated that when properly installed, child safety seats reduce the risk of death by 69 percent for infants and 47 percent for toddlers.

In 1996, the American Academy of Pediatrics and Allstate Insurance Company launched a national child passenger safety awareness campaign, All Kids Safe, to promote public awareness about the correct use of child safety seats and seat belts. Readers and viewers may obtain a free copy of the brochure by sending a self-addressed, stamped business-size envelope to: American Academy of Pediatrics, Dept. C-Shopping Guide, PO Box 927, Elk Grove Village, IL 60009-0927. Parents also can obtain the updated child passenger safety informational brochure as well as important child passenger safety information and tips through many pediatricians and Allstate Insurance agents offices.

During the second year of the All Kids Safe campaign, the National Association of Childrens Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) joins the AAP and Allstate to promote child passenger safety issues at the community and hospital level(s).
