Newswise — This summer/fall the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB) is providing you with an unbeatable educational opportunity. We are offering intensive training in both general biofeedback and in neurofeedback. Plus, AAPB will be giving you a chance to get the inside details on the insurance issues facing the industry. For details or to register, visit http://www.aapb.org.

August 3-7, 2004 " Denver, ColoradoThese two courses are offered concurrently. Attendees may register for one or the other, but not both.

Fundamentals of General BiofeedbackInstructors: Donald Moss, PhD, Doil Montgomery, PhD, and Fred Shaffer, PhD(40 Hours of Continuing Education) Biofeedback offers a breadth of options for treatment in the current challenging health care environment. This course is critical for the clinician who desires to incorporate biofeedback into clinical practice and the practitioner who wants to update biofeedback skills. Biofeedback treatment of various clinical disorders will be discussed as biofeedback is used to reduce distress and to enhance adaptive functioning. This workshop will cover the BCIA Blueprint for Biofeedback certification, which includes: of home study consisting of nine hours, which must be completed in order to receive the certificate of completion.

Fundamentals of NeurofeedbackInstructors: Donald Moss, PhD, Doil Montgomery, PhD, and Fred Shaffer, PhD (36 Hours of Continuing Education) This workshop will present current knowledge regarding electroencephalographic (EEG) activity and the various clinical applications associated with EEG neurofeedback. Hands-on demonstrations will be part of these presentations. The workshop will explore the current status of neurofeedback in applied psychophysiological research and in therapeutic areas for which there is published evidence of clinical effectiveness: ADD/ADHD; anxiety/depression, learning disabilities, drug addiction, post traumatic stress disorder, insomnia, and seizures. In addition, neurofeedback will be discussed in other promising areas of clinical application, such as mild traumatic brain injury and chronic fatigue syndrome.

October 21, 2004 " Chicago, IllinoisHeart Rate Variability Biofeedback in Clinical Practice Instructor: Richard Gevirtz, PhD(7 Hours Continuing Education) In recent years, Heart Rate Variability has become a common measure in predicting cardiac risk. It has been shown that increased variability is associated with favorable outcomes independent of traditional risk factors such as smoking, diet, exercise, etc. Using biofeedback to increase variability and establish autonomic stability is a new application within applied psychophysiology that is showing a great deal of promise. In this workshop, the background necessary to understand HRV biofeedback and measurement will be presented. Applications to asthma, cardiac rehab, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and chronic pain will be presented and protocols proposed.

October 22, 2004 " Chicago, IllinoisBiobehavioral Considerations in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Headache DisordersInstructor: Steven Baskin, PhD(7 Hours Continuing Education) This workshop is an in-depth clinical guide to the many advances in the diagnosis and management of migraine, cluster headaches, tension-type headache and their many variants. Attendees will explore the pathophysiology of the different disorders integrating neurochemical, physiological, psychological and behavioral perspectives. Pharmacological, psychophysiologic, and behavioral treatment alternatives will be reviewed in relation to both clinical efficacy and underlying pain mechanisms. This workshop will help the biofeedback therapist understand the basics of successful headache diagnosis and treatment better communication with the medical community. Behavioral and biofeedback protocols will be discussed.

October 23, 2004 " Chicago, IllinoisGeneral Clinical Biofeedback: A Review Instructor: Doil Montgomery, PhD(7 Hours Continuing Education) This workshop will be a review of biofeedback and associated adjunctive techniques used in a mental health clinic. It will cover clinical applications of Surface EMG, Finger Temperature, Skin Conductance Activity, and Heart Rate. We will discuss how these modalities are used to assess physiological response style, facilitate physiological self-regulation to treat a variety of disorders, and as an adjunctive technique during psychotherapy. There also will be an opportunity to discuss your cases. In addition to providing clinical applications of biofeedback, the workshop will serve as a review for those who are preparing for the BCIA General Certification Examination.

The Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB) was founded in 1969 as the Biofeedback Research Society. Biofeedback is a process of learning greater body control, with the aid of instruments that monitor physiological changes. Psychophysiology is the science of mind-body interaction. The goals of the association are to promote a new understanding of biofeedback and advance the methods used in this practice. AAPB's mission is to advance the development, dissemination and utilization of knowledge about applied psychophysiology and biofeedback.
