Newswise — Manhattan, NY, Sept. 15, 2015 – The American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA) will host its 4th Annual Tri-State Autoimmune on Sunday, September 20, at 10 a.m. at Hudson River Park’s Clinton Cove (55th Street and 12th Avenue; Pier 97) in Manhattan. Walkers from throughout the Tri-State area will gather to walk in teams and individually, in honor and support of family members, friends and colleagues combating autoimmune diseases, which affect 50 million Americans (1 in 6).

AARDA is the nation’s only nonprofit dedicated to bringing a national focus to autoimmunity as a category of disease and a major women’s health issue – approximately 75 percent of autoimmune disease sufferers are women. AARDA’s mission is to eradicate autoimmune diseases, improve treatment options, and provide information, support and hope to patients and families through research, education, community programs and advocacy. Autoimmune diseases encompass more than 100 diseases, including, Lupus, Type 1 Diabetes, Scleroderma, Multiple Sclerosis, Crohn’s Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Relapsing Polychondritis and Celiac Disease.

The event will include activities for children, booths offering information and resources and a raffle. The Autoimmune Walk is non-competitive; participants may walk as far as they wish or simply join us to network and enjoy activities. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

“AARDA Autoimmune Walks have not only proven to be instrumental in raising funds for autoimmune research but they are also helpful in linking patients, families, supporters, advocates and other stakeholders together for a shared cause,” says Virginia T. Ladd, president and executive director. “The camaraderie and synergy that occurs is just tremendous.”

Tri-State Autoimmune Walk sponsors include CVS Health and Intercept Pharmaceuticals.
