DR. CHRISTINA SURAWICZ ELECTED PRESIDENT OF AMERICAN COLLEGE OF GASTROENTEROLOGY

October 12, 1998, Boston, MA -- Physician members of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), a national specialty association representing nearly 7,000 clinical gastroenterologists and other specialists in digestive diseases, have elected Christina M. Surawicz, M.D., F.A.C.G., of Seattle, Washington as their 1998-1999 president. Dr. Surawicz will direct ACG's programs which include continuing medical education in the clinical, scientific and patient-related skills of gastroenterology, policies involving national and state medical affairs, managed care issues and clinical investigation. Dr. Surawicz is the first woman to serve as President of the College.

The election of Dr. Surawicz took place at the College's Annual Scientific Meeting, held this week in Boston. During the next year, Dr. Surawicz will preside over the ACG Board of Trustees, which is the College's primary policy-making body. ACG is active on both the national and state levels in the areas of physician continuing education, legislative and regulatory matters affecting physicians and patients, as well as in publications, managed care, practice management and other areas relating to physician treatment of patients with digestive conditions.

Dr. Surawicz is a professor of medicine and a clinical gastroenterologist at the University of Washington, as well as Gastroenterology Section Chief at Harborview Medical Center, a County hospital and one of the teaching hospitals associated with the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Surawicz has been an active member in the American College of Gastroenterology since 1988. Her research interests are in infectious colitis.

Dr. Surawicz did undergraduate studies at Barnard College in New York. She graduated with honors from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and did her internship, residency and fellowship work at the University of Washington. In addition to ACG, she is active in many professional and civic organizations.

Dr. Surawicz was selected to the first and second editions of The Best Doctors in America in 1992 and 1993. She has also been selected to the Best Doctors in America, The Pacific Region for the 1996-1997 and 1998-1999 editions.

Dr. Surawicz is the author and co-author of 46 peer-reviewed articles, 43 abstracts, 31 book chapters and 2 books. She serves as an editor of several journals, including Gastroenterology and Endoscopy News, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Digestive Diseases and Practical Gastroenterology.

Dr. Surawicz is married to James Bushyhead, M.D., an internist, has three sons and is active in scholastic and outdoor activities with her family.
