Newswise — As part of its George McMillan Fleming Center for Healthcare Management Panel Discussion series, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) will co-host a panel discussion with Greater Houston Healthconnect (Healthconnect), the region’s health information network. Nationally recognized policy leader and Acting National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Jacob Reider, M.D., and leading health IT researchers Mark Frisse, M.D., and Douglas McCarthy will highlight some of the most recent health IT policy initiatives and examine current evidence surrounding the impact of health information technology on clinical practice.
What: “The Billion Dollar Question: Is the Investment in Health Information Technology Paying Off?”
Who: Jacob Reider, M.D., is the Acting National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), Health and Human Services, the primary federal entity responsible for national implementation of health IT legislation.
Mark Frisse, M.D., M.Sc., MBA, is the Accenture Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the Vanderbilt School of Medicine and currently serves as the director of the project management office for a $19 million CMS Innovation Award focused on care coordination.
Douglas McCarthy, MBA, is a leading researcher in the field of health outcomes and serves as a senior research advisor to the Commonwealth Fund and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
Jim Langabeer, Ph.D., associate professor at UTHealth’s School of Public Health and a noted cardiovascular researcher affiliated with the American Heart Association, will serve as the moderator. Dr. Langabeer is also the president and CEO of the regional health information exchange, Healthconnect.

Panelists will discuss the impact information technology is having on healthcare quality, clinical decision-making and cost. Topics will include the value of electronic medical record interoperability across non-affiliated health care providers and projected future polices implications.
