Newswise — Over the past few months, fans of Matthew McConaughey might have seen photographs of him looking very slim. Indeed, the Hollywood star lost 38 pounds for his role as an AIDS patient in the upcoming movie The Dallas Buyers Club. McConaughey recently shared some thoughts about his dramatic weight loss and how he’s feeling after reaching his goal weight of 143 pounds. McConaughey, who is nearly six feet tall and keeps himself in good shape, lost much of his signature muscle mass for the role.

In a recent interview, McConaughey said, “I've lost 38 pounds. I feel good now. Overall, [I] probably got 35 percent less energy, but there’s been plateaus. Getting past 170 was really hard, but then once you get [to] 167, the next seven come off easy. Getting past 160...really hard. But then you fly down to 150. Getting past 150 was really hard and then, bam! [I] got down to 143 and that’s where I want to be.”

He continued, “Once you get past the plateau, your body seems to understand, ‘Okay, this is...where we are,’ and so the energy rises. I’m doing cardio, but I’ll tell you what I’ve learned... and I think it comes with age too: It’s 90 percent about diet.... Right now I’m not losing any more weight if I burn 1,500 calories, [whether I do] two hours of cardio in an afternoon or if I don’t. It doesn’t matter. It’s a matter of how much I eat or how little I eat.”

“We don’t recommend that dieters follow Mr. McConaughey’s example, since he lost so much muscle,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).

“However, Mr. McConaughey made two excellent points that all who are interested in fat loss should remember,” adds Tom Griesel. “First, there will be plateaus, but if you stick with a program you will drive right past them to the finish line. Second, as the man said, it is in fact ‘90 percent about diet.’ Strenuous exercise and aerobics don’t help much and are usually counterproductive, because they trigger the loss of lean body mass on restricted-calorie diets, which will lower your base metabolic rate. One should aim for a rapid loss of excess body fat while maintaining or even adding lean body mass. This is a win-win situation that always results in a fabulous-looking body and optimal health.”
