Newswise — NEW ORLEANS (April 29, 2013) — Alex Valadka, MD, FAANS, FACS, has been named treasurer of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) during the AANS 81st Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans, held April 27-May 1, 2013. This appointment comes on the heels of Dr. Valadka’s one-year stint as AANS’ 2012-2013 Vice President.

Based in Austin, Texas, Dr. Valadka is the Chief Executive Officer of the Seton Brain and Spine Institute. His service with the AANS includes participation on its Board of Directors, as well as service as chair of the Membership Committee, Public Relations Committee, the Washington Committee for Neurosurgery, and the AANS/Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care, respectively.

A member of more than 15 professional societies, Dr. Valadka also has held editorial board positions for publications such as Neurosurgical Focus, AANS Neurosurgeon, Journal of Trauma and Journal of Neurotrauma. He is the author of 95 abstracts, 30 book chapters and more than 75 scientific papers. In 2005, he co-edited the textbook Neurotrauma: Evidence-Based Answers to Common Questions.

Among Dr. Valadka’s goals for his new role is to “[work] with all AANS members to ensure that we provide the best possible care to our patients as technology and health-care delivery systems undergo rapid change,” he says. “Internationally, the AANS will strengthen its relationships with neurosurgeons and neurosurgical societies in other countries, and continue to be the leading voice for neurosurgical safety and quality.”

Dr. Valadka, who counts neurotrauma and critical care among his clinical and research interests, is a graduate of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed his neurosurgical residency at the Medical College of Virginia.
