Dr. Shifrin’s presentation, entitled Neuroendocrine Carcinoma Metastatic to the Parathyroid Gland Re-Implanted into the forearm of a Patient with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 Syndrome: A Challenging Management Dilemma, highlighted the case of a patient suffering from Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN-1 syndrome).
MEN-1, also called Wermer's syndrome, is a rare disorder that affects the endocrine system through development of neoplastic lesions in the pituitary, parathyroid gland and pancreas. MEN-1 can cause tumors in the endocrine glands, thymus, bronchus, stomach and small intestines. Dr. Shifrin’s work focused on Metastatic thymic carcinoma to the parathyroid gland. The complexity of the case reflects the caliber and expertise behind Jersey Shore’s high volume thyroid and endocrine oncology program.
