Newswise — Allan W. Silberman, MD, Ph.D, clinical chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, has been named the inaugural holder of the hospital's Robert J. and Suzanne Gottlieb Endowed Chair in Surgical Oncology. The endowment will support continuing research on new surgical interventions for both children and adults with cancer.

The recipient of numerous awards and honors for his accomplishments in both research and teaching, Silberman has been an attending physician at the Cedars-Sinai Outpatient Cancer Center at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute for the past 20 years.

Suzanne Gottlieb is a prominent philanthropist in the Los Angeles community. She and her late husband Robert have been longtime supporters of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. To endow a chair, a donor makes a minimum gift $1.5 million, the interest from which supports advanced research into diseases and development of new therapies and procedures.

Silberman's clinical expertise is in gastrointestinal surgery (including colorectal, esophageal, pancreatic and hepatobiliary cancers), breast cancer, melanoma, sarcoma (cancer of the bone and soft tissues), endocrine surgery and inflammatory bowel disease. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and has been cited in "Best Doctors in America, Pacific Region."

He has published research extensively in peer-reviewed publications and co-edited the 2002 textbook "Surgical Oncology: Multidisciplinary Approach to Difficult Problems." The second edition of this textbook, published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, is currently under way. His current research interest involves the genetic analysis of patients with multiple primary malignancies.

Silberman received his doctorate in biochemistry from Boston University Graduate School and his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. His general surgery residency was at the Tufts-New England Medical Center Hospital in Boston. He completed his fellowship in surgical oncology at the John Wayne Cancer Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine.

One of only five hospitals in California whose nurses have been honored with the prestigious Magnet designation, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is one of the largest nonprofit academic medical centers in the Western United States. For 17 consecutive years, it has been named Los Angeles' most preferred hospital for all health needs in an independent survey of area residents. Cedars-Sinai is internationally renowned for its diagnostic and treatment capabilities and its broad spectrum of programs and services, as well as breakthroughs in biomedical research and superlative medical education. It ranks among the top 10 non-university hospitals in the nation for its research activities and was recently fully accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc.
