Newswise — The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) will present the Flame of Excellence Award to Anne Alexandrov, RN, PhD, CCRN, FAAN, a recognized clinical expert in the areas of emergency and critical care with concentrations in neuroscience and vascular dynamics.
She will receive the award at the 2013 National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition, Boston, May 18-23. The Flame of Excellence Award honors sustained contributions to acute and critical care nursing at a high level and with broad reach.
Alexandrov is assistant dean and professor at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), School of Nursing, with a joint appointment as a professor of neurology at the UAB Comprehensive Stroke Research Center. She is program director for NET SMART, a federally funded, collaborative educational program between UAB and Arizona State University, providing Internet-based education and training for advanced practice nurses as primary emergency responders for acute stroke.
At UAB, she developed the world’s first postgraduate fellowship training program for advanced practice nurses in acute stroke and has mentored more than 100 APNs in the United States and abroad.
She has previously held positions as nurse manager for an emergency department and neuroscience unit, director of nursing for cardiac care services, educator for critical care and emergency services, chief flight nurse for a helicopter transport program and clinical nurse specialist/outcomes manager for neuroscience and emergency services.
Considered the leading international nursing authority in acute stroke management, she has authored numerous original scientific publications related to her work in the area of stroke reperfusion and blood flow augmentation strategies, stroke center development and credentialing, and outcomes measurement and management. Her book, “Outcomes Management: Applications to Clinical Practice,” has been rated by readers as the definitive source for starting and enhancing an outcomes measurement and management initiative and was awarded the 2001 AJN Book of the Year Award.
In addition to her service as AACN’s 1999-2000 president, she was the first nurse member of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Neurologic Device Approval Panel and was a member of the National Quality Forum Steering Committee on Safe U.S. Health Care Practices and the American Stroke Association’s Executive Leadership Board. She currently serves on the Board of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education for the American Association of Colleges of Nurses, and the National Quality Forum’s Physician Practice Standardization Steering Committee, the Consensus Standards Approval Committee and the Stroke Technical Advisory Panel.
Alexandrov developed the reviewer role for The Joint Commission’s Stroke Center Certification Program and conducted the first 20 reviews of hospitals competing for this recognition.
Alexandrov’s many honors include induction as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2004, the American Stroke Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 2003, the American Heart Association’s Stroke Manuscript of the Year Award in 2003, the American Stroke Association Texas Affiliate’s Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award in 2002, and the John P. McGovern Teaching Excellence Award from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) in 1999.
She is a diploma graduate of Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing, Houston, and earned her BSN and MSN from UTHealth School of Nursing, Houston. She received her Ph.D. from Texas Women’s University, Houston, which focuses on integrated systemic and intracranial hemodynamics.
