Newswise — WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 6, 2015) — The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) has named Pennsylvania-based neurosurgeon Robert E. Harbaugh, MD, FAANS, as its 2015-2016 Immediate Past President. His appointment was announced during the 83rd AANS Annual Scientific Meeting held in Washington, D.C., May 2-6, 2015. He will join President H. Hunt Batjer, MD, FAANS; President-Elect Frederick A. Boop, MD, FAANS; Vice President Deborah L. Benzil, MD, FAANS; Treasurer Alex B. Valadka, MD, FAANS; and Secretary Christopher I. Shaffrey, MD, FAANS, to complete the 2015-2016 AANS Executive Committee.

Harbaugh is the chairman and distinguished professor of neurosurgery and director of the Neuroscience Institute at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and the Penn State College of Medicine. He most recently served as the 2014-2015 president of the AANS. A member of the AANS since 1986, Harbaugh has served as AANS Treasurer, as well as chaired, respectively, the Finance Committee, the AANS/Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Washington Committee and the AANS Resident Mentoring Program.

“The AANS has become a very complex organization that is dedicated to advancing neurosurgery. The AANS has become indispensable for neurosurgeons in many ways: neurosurgical education (meetings, courses, the Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group journals, AANS Neurosurgeon, Neurosurgical Research and Education Foundation (NREF) resident courses, coding courses, practice management courses, etc.), neurosurgical research, quality improvement, advocacy and numerous member services. It has been a great honor to me to serve as the president of this outstanding organization, and I look forward to further service in my new role,” commented Harbaugh.

In addition to his leadership in the AANS, Harbaugh served as president of NeuroPoint Alliance and has held numerous leadership positions in other organizations — including the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the Society of Neurological Surgeons where he presently serves as president-elect. Harbaugh is also a member of the National Football League’s Head, Neck and Spine Committee.
