AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION CRITICIZES TOBACCO SETTLEMENT FOR EXCLUDING COMMUNITIES OF COLOR

WHO:

∑ John Garrison, CEO, American Lung Association

∑ Jacqueline McLeod, Past President, American Lung Association

∑ Samuel Aguayo, M.D., American Thoracic Society

∑ Rep. John Lewis (D-GA)

∑ Denise Rolark-Barnes, Publisher, Washington Informer

∑ Kevin Powell, Music Industry Critic, Founding member of VIBE Magazine

WHAT: The $368.5 billion proposed tobacco settlement does not address the needs of communities of color. While the recent Koop-Kessler report provides a starting point for discussion among these communities, the American Lung Association encourages a comprehensive analysis of the settlement's impact on communities of color.

This press briefing will focus on settlement's implications for communities of color in the following areas:

Public health policy

Promotion of tobacco products to minority youth

Advertising in minority media

Marketing of tobacco products in developing countries

WHEN: 10:00 am, Tuesday, July 15, 1997

WHERE: Holeman Lounge

National Press Club

14th & F Streets, N.W.

Washington, D.C.

WHY: Each year tobacco companies spend about $5 billion to promote their products. A significant proportion of those dollars is used to intensively target both African-Americans and Hispanics. An estimated 47,000 African-Americans die from smoking-related diseases annually. Smoking is on the rise among Asian-Americans and Native-Americans.
