Newswise — PHILADELPHIA — Continuing the tradition of honoring outstanding achievement in cancer research, the American Association for Cancer Research is currently accepting nominations for its annual scientific awards and lectureships, to be presented at the AACR Annual Meeting 2013, which will be held April 6-10, 2013, in Washington, D.C.
Since 1961, the AACR has presented hundreds of prizes, awards and lectureships to recognize the achievements of scientists and physicians who have made significant contributions to the understanding, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer.
The awards and lectureships are:
AACR-Joseph H. Burchenal Clinical Research Award
Established in 1996, this award is presented to a scientist to recognize an outstanding achievement in clinical cancer research. It is named for the late Joseph H. Burchenal, M.D., honorary member and past president of the AACR, and a major figure in clinical cancer research and chemotherapy.
The recipient will receive an honorarium of $10,000, sponsored by Bristol-Myers Squibb, and give a lecture at the AACR Annual Meeting 2013.
Candidacy is open to all cancer researchers who are affiliated with any institution involved in cancer research, cancer medicine or cancer-related biomedical science anywhere in the world. Such institutions include those in academia, industry or government. Institutions and organizations are not eligible; the award will be presented to an individual investigator.
AACR-G.H.A. Clowes Memorial Award
The AACR and Eli Lilly and Company established the G.H.A. Clowes Memorial Award in 1961 to honor G.H.A. Clowes, a founding member of the AACR and a research director at Eli Lilly. This honor recognizes an individual with outstanding recent accomplishments in basic cancer research.
The recipient will receive a $10,000 honorarium, sponsored by Eli Lilly, and give a lecture at the AACR Annual Meeting 2013. The winning researcher will also speak at an upcoming Lilly-Indiana University symposium in 2013.
Candidacy is open to all cancer researchers who are affiliated with any institution involved in cancer research, cancer medicine or cancer-related biomedical science anywhere in the world. Such institutions include those in academia, industry or government. The award will be presented to an individual investigator; institutions and organizations are not eligible.
AACR Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cancer Research
The AACR established this award in 1977 through the generous contribution of an anonymous donor to give recognition to a young investigator on the basis of meritorious achievement in cancer research.
The recipient of this clinical cancer research award will receive a $5,000 honorarium and present a lecture at the Annual Meeting 2013.
In accordance with the wishes of the donor, the recipient must not have reached his or her 41st birthday by the time the award is presented. Candidacy is open to all young researchers who are affiliated with any institution involved in cancer research, cancer medicine or cancer-related biomedical science anywhere in the world. Such institutions include those in academia, industry or government.
AACR-Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award
The AACR and the Rosenthal Family Foundation established this award in 1977 to recognize research that has made, or promises to soon make, a notable contribution to improved clinical care in the field of cancer. In its desire to honor and provide incentive to investigators relatively early in their careers, the foundation has stipulated that recipients not be more than 50 years of age at the time the award is received.
The recipient of this translational cancer research award will receive a $10,000 honorarium, sponsored by the Rosenthal Family Foundation, and present a lecture at the AACR Annual Meeting 2013.
Candidacy is open to all cancer researchers no older than 50 who are affiliated with any institution involved in cancer research, cancer medicine or cancer-related biomedical science anywhere in the world. Such institutions include those in academia, industry or government. The candidate must be engaged in the practice of medicine.
