APHON Membership Awards recognize members who have shown outstanding achievement in their field.

Rachel Glincher, BSN RN CPHON®APHON Counts My Most Memorable Case AwardMy Most Memorable Case articles feature personal stories from APHON members and the various life lessons their patients have taught them. Glincher, Senior Staff Nurse at Maimonides Medical Center, won this award for her My Most Memorable Case article, “The Use of Color Coding to Ensure Compliance” in the Spring 2015 issue.

Emily Browne, DNP RN CPNPAPHON Counts Writing AwardThe APHON Counts Writing Award is given to recognize a contributing author of the newsletter. Brown, Advanced Practice Director at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, won this award for her article; “Measuring Quality in the Era of Healthcare Reform” published in the Fall 2014 issue.

Kathleen Spencer, MSN APN CPNP CPON® & Kelly Tickle, MSN APN CWON PCNS-BC PPCNP-BCAPHON Counts Writing AwardThe APHON Counts Writing Award is given to recognize a contributing author of the newsletter. Spencer and Tickle co-authored and won this award for their article, “Hematopoietic SCT: An Inspiring Cure for Sickle Cell Disease” published in the Spring 2015 Issue.

Suzanne Ameringer, PhD RNAPHON Writing Award (JOPON)The Writing Award is given to an APHON member who is a first-time author of a manuscript accepted for publication in JOPON in the last year and who has had three or more manuscripts published previously. Ameringer of the School of Nursing, Virginia Commonwealth University won this award for her article, “Fatigue in Adolescents and Young Adults with Sickle Cell Disease: Biological and Behavioral Correlates and Health-Related Quality of Life” in the January/February 2014 issue.

Wendy Davis, RN CPON®Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Instructor of the Year AwardThe Instructor of the Year Award recognizes an APHON Pediatric Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Instructor who positively impacts the students they teach and the patients and families they serve by demonstrating leadership and excellence in the classroom. Davis, Clinical Practice and Education Specialist at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, has been an active member since 2009 and coordinates the Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Course for all inpatient and outpatient oncology staff nurses at her institution. In her nomination for Davis, Rachel Andam-Mejia, MSN RN, stated “Wendy has demonstrated excellence in the classroom not just by offering the APHON Chemotherapy and Biotherapy and enhancing her learners’ competency through the course material, didactic testing, and clinical skills competency skills lab, but also by actively reassuring and building her learners’ confidence throughout the course and clinical practice.”

Julia Rose Golden, MSN RN CPHON®Dianne Fochtman New Author (JOPON) The Dianne Fochtman New Author Award is presented to an APHON member who is a first-time author of a manuscript accepted for publication in JOPON in the last year and for whom this is the first or second time a manuscript has been published. Golden, the Acute Care Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant Nurse Practitioner at Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron, OH, won this award for her article, “A Nurse Practitioner Patient Care Team: Implications for Pediatric Oncology” published in the November/December 2014 issue.

Emily Browne, DNP RN CPNPExcellence in Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) AwardThe Excellence in EBP Award recognizes an APHON member who has demonstrated high quality contributions to evidence-based practice in the nursing care of children and their families in any area of hematology/oncology nursing practice. Browne, Advanced Practice Director at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, has been an active APHON member since 2003. Browne’s nominator, Belinda Mandrell, PhD RN PNP-BC, stated “Emily is making her own contribution to the field as she implements an evidence based practice obesity intervention program for patients receiving active treatment for leukemia.”

Karyn Brundige, MSN CPNP ARNPJean Fergusson Excellence in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nursing Education AwardThe Jean Fergusson Education Award recognizes an outstanding educator in the field of pediatric hematology/oncology nursing through demonstration of proficiency, professional contributions to the field, and positive teacher-learner relationships. Brundige, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurse Practitioner at Seattle Children’s Hospital, has been an active member since 1992 and has actively participated at both the local and national level. Her colleagues speak very highly of her, one of them stating, “she is completely devoted to her patients and their families. she is an incredible educator and starts this process from the first meeting with a family and never stops.”

Emily Long, BSN RN CPHON®Jean Fergusson Excellence in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nursing Practice AwardThe Jean Fergusson Practice Award recognizes a pediatric hematology/oncology nurse for compassion and expertise in clinical nursing practice and for actively incorporating research and new ideas into clinical practice. Long, Pediatric Clinical Nurse III at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, has been an APHON member since 2012. Shannon R. O’Neill nominated Long and shared, “Emily is so deserving of the Jean Fergusson Excellence in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Practice Award due to her excellent care and advocacy of patients’, and their families.”

Stacey Crane, MSN RN CCRP CPON®Novice Researcher AwardThe Novice Researcher Award is given to a novice nurse scientist. Crane, a Predoctoral Nursing Fellow at Indiana University School of Nursing in Indianapolis, IN, has been actively involved in two nursing research studies in various roles. “Stacey has the personal qualities and determination to make highly significant contributions to knowledge development and clinical practice related care of children with high risk cancer and their families,” shared her nominator, Joan Haase, PhD RN FAAN.

Its members are dedicated to promoting optimal nursing care for children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and blood disorders, and their families. APHON provides the leadership and expertise to pediatric hematology/oncology nurses by defining and promoting the highest standards of practice and care to the pediatric, adolescent and young adult communities.
