ARTS & HUMANITIES TIPS FROM UAB OFFICE OF MEDIA RELATIONS

1. Refresh by Reframing

Just because you framed it 10 years ago, doesn't mean that your art is preserved today, says Toni Nordan, curator of the UAB Visual Arts Gallery. "Even archival or acid-free papers and matting need to be replaced after about 10 years. Take this opportunity to pull out different colors in your art and in the room in which it's displayed. Another idea when re-matting or re-framing is to redecorate by simply moving your art to a different room. That way you can 'refresh' the art and your home at a relatively low cost and see the art in a new light."

2. Write a Book, Make Millions, Retire

Want to write a book or the great American novel? Lack of knowledge, time and fear keep most people from writing, says UAB Special Studies instructor and author Cheryl Wray, who teaches free-lance writing. "First, learn about the markets, agents and what genres are selling." Read a lot of good writing and learn how it's done. No time to write? Be creative. "Carry a notebook or tape recorder at all times to take notes while commuting or waiting at the doctor's office. Write during times that work best for you. Don't write late at night if you're not a night person. Many don't write because they fear rejection. But remember, if you're not being rejected, you're not doing anything."
