The first ASME Asia Congress and Exhibition, sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), will be held in Singapore, September 30 to October 2, 1997, at the Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre. This conference provides a forum for engineers to examine environmental issues and technological advancements relevant to this region's industries, particularly those involved in power generation, offshore technology, oil and gas.

The ASME Asia Congress, which is expected to be held every two years, is the first event to be jointly sponsored by the International Gas Turbine Institute and ASME's Petroleum, Advanced Energy Systems and Ocean Engineering divisions. Also participating in the conference are ASME's Singapore Chapter, the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, the Institution of Engineers of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore.

More than 100 refereed technical papers will be presented during the technical sessions, which will address regional market issues, project and fuel development, compliance and other topics.

Several special panel sessions are planned for the conference. Leaders from the gas-turbine and petroleum industries will explore such subjects as large-scale petroleum chemical engineering and power-generation projects in Asia. Panel members will also present their experiences with operating large gas-turbine power plants and maintaining gas turbomachinery.

ASME Asia's plenary session on Sept. 30 will feature Hang Chang-Chieh, deputy chairman of Singapore's National Science and Technology Board. He will discuss power and energy technology issues in Asia.
